Why do Willamette Valley exteriors need a gentler method?
Rain is the short answer. Eugene gets 40.8 inches of rain in a normal year, while Corvallis gets 43.0. Salem, at the north end of the route, averages 40.1, according to NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals. So north walls and shaded roof planes stay damp for long stretches between October and spring.
On shingle roofs, that damp matters structurally. According to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, moss curls shingle edges upward, which raises the blow-off risk in wind. Its guidance rules out pressure washers on asphalt shingle altogether. GAF gives the reason: a pressure washer can strip granules and lift shingles. Shade matters as much as rain. OSU Extension notes that roof moss depends on shade, so letting the sun in slows its return. Trimming those branches is arborist work, though, rather than a job for a washing crew.
